Can’t stand that smell on your camera lens or body?
Whether you recently bought a used lens or have been dealing with the odor for a while, you need to get rid of it so you can enjoy your photography.
Here are the best tips and tricks to remove the smell from your camera lens or body:
Air It Out
Let the lens/camera air out in an open, well-ventilated area over time. The smell often dissipates naturally after a while.
Place the lens/camera in a box with baking soda, coffee grounds, or charcoal to help absorb the odors as it airs out.
Clean It
Gently wipe down the non-glass/non-electronic parts with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner like Windex or dish soap. Avoid getting moisture on any sensitive components.
Wipe down with white vinegar, which can help remove odors.
Use a soft brush and air blower to remove any dust or debris before cleaning.
Use Odor Absorbers
Hang an air freshener like a "magic tree" near the lens/camera to help neutralize the smell.
Place the lens/camera in a sealed container or bag with an odor absorber like activated charcoal for a day.
Leave the lens/camera in a well-ventilated bathroom to let other smells overpower the odor.
Try using baby wipes on the exterior to help remove some of the smell.
Put the lens/camera in a container with coffee grounds or powder, as the oils can help neutralize the smell.
Use a specialized odor-removing product like Zorb-X that doesn't leave its own scent.
Try an odor-neutralizing product designed for refrigerators, which often contain activated charcoal and baking soda.
For a more unusual approach, place the lens/camera in a plastic bag with some baking soda and a couple of leaves from a plant with a strong scent like mint. Let it sit for a few days.
And That’s It
Be patient.
And most importantly, always handle your gear with care to prevent future odor issues.
I hope that helps.
